Co-Supervision Model funded by NSF CETP Level 2 Funding Grant
Contact
srandall@bloomu.edu for further
details of the grant project Co-supervision of Student Teachers: Year 1A Co-Supervision Model was implemented during the
2001-02 year at Bloomsburg University in which 25 secondary education
mathematics and science student teachers were co-visited by education
and mathematics and science content faculty members and provided with
feedback. Feedback was
given in terms of pedagogy, accuracy of content knowledge, and the
degree to which constructivist teaching was observed, as noted on the
Protocol for Classroom Observation (PCO). Each student teacher was visited twice during the
semester. Education and
content faculty were paired, based on content background, geographic
preferences of where student teachers were placed, and previous contact
with student teachers in content courses. Prior to doing observations in the classroom, 7 training sessions were held in which 24 university faculty members were trained in the use of the PCO and oriented to constructivist teaching practices, the Charlotte Danielson Framework for Effective Teaching Model, and the requirements of student teachers. 24 faculty members were involved in the training
and 21 faculty (7 education, 3 biology, 1 chemistry, 1 geoscience, 3
physics, and 6 mathematics) made co-supervision visits during the
2001-02 year. Participants in the BU CETP-PA Co-Supervision grant project included the following university faculty members: Education facultyViola Supon, Mary Alice Wheeler, Don Pratt, Frank Keating, John Grabert, Tom Paternostro, Larry Maurer, and Robert Clarke Science facultyBiology: Jim Parsons, Marianna Wood, and Cindy Surmacz Chemistry: Bruce Wilcox, Cindy Kepler, and Emeric Schultz Geoscience: Dale Springer Physics: Jim Hetrick, Jim Moser, and Peter Stine Mathematics facultyElizabeth Mauch,

Co-Supervision in Action
Faculty members Mary Alice Wheeler (secondary education) and Lisa Lister (mathematics) provide feedback to student teacher Travis Hess (secondary educations mathematics major) following an observation at Central Columbia High School in Bloomsburg, PA. Travis’s cooperating teacher was Suzanne Moore.
