Math & Science Summer Experience for Young Women
July 14-17, 2008
The College of Science and Technology at Bloomsburg University is proud to announce the second annual summer experience for girls in 6th, 7th and 8th grade. Middle school girls (girls entering grades 6, 7 and 8 in the fall) are invited to apply for a week-long experience titled Math & Science Summer Experience for Young Women (MSSEYW). The Math & Science Summer Experience for Young Women provides an avenue for young women to develop their science and math ability and interest. Each student will have an opportunity to explore science and math through classroom presentations, hands-on activities, and math and science demonstrations. The goal of the Experience is to encourage girls who are considering careers in fields which will utilize science and math and to inform them about the necessary preparations for college for success in these fields.
Participants will learn about mathematical problem solving, the computer program ALICE and Planetary Science. The girls will work with science and mathematics professors and undergraduate students. MSSEYW participants will also have the opportunity to work with other girls who share their interest in math and science. The Math & Science Summer Experience for Young Women will run from 9 am until 4 pm each day.
We have changed the format from last year for the MSSEYW. A typical day will entail three 1 1/2 hour sessions where students will study:
- Mathematical Problem Solving
- ALICE computer program
- Planetary Science
Students will cover each of these topics each day for 1 and 1/2 hours. At the end of the week, parents will be invited so that students can "show off" their new talents!
All young women entering grades 6, 7 and 8 in the fall are invited to apply for the experience. .
Information for MSSEYW:
- The session will be held from July 14-17, 2008.
- The cost to attend the Math & Science Summer Experience for Young Women is $150. This fee includes lunch and snacks each day, a participant t-shirt and all materials needed to participate in the experience.

- Scholarships are available to those who might not otherwise be able to attend the experience. Young women who will need a scholarship should submit a letter of request with their application, explaining the need for the scholarship. Additionally, a letter from a current math or science teacher should be submitted with the application explaining the young woman’s mathematical and/or science abilities. - Early application deadline: April 27, 2008. Early applicants will be notified by May 7, 2008. Apply early to be guaranteed a spot in the Math & Science Summer Experience for Young Women.
- All applications received after April 27, 2008 will be accepted if space permits. Cost for the experience after this date is $175. All applications must be received by June 8, 2008. All applicants will be notified by June 15, 2008.
- Payment (to Bloomsburg University) should be included with application. Checks will be cashed once the student has been accepted into the Math & Science Summer Experience for Young Women
