Summer Experiences

The Department of Mathematics, Computer Science & Statistics operated several summer experiences this summer.

  • CSI Summer Experience (targeted for students entering grades 9-11).  The CSI Summer Experience was a one week experience that provided an avenue for students to develop their science and math ability and interest.  Each student had an opportunity to explore science and math through classroom presentations, hands-on activities, and math and science demonstrations.   Students studied forensic chemistry with Dr. Mike Pugh, Global Positioning with Dr. Robert Marande, Computer Forensics with Dr. Scott Inch, encryption with Dr. John Polhill and carbon dating with Dr. John Hranitz.

   Math & Science Summer Experience (targeted for students entering grades 6-8).  The Math & Science Summer Experience was a one week experience that provided an avenue for middle school students to develop their science and math ability and interest.  Each student had an opportunity to explore science and math through classroom presentations, hands-on activities, and math and science demonstrations.   Students rotated each day among three different activities which were 1.5 hours in length.  Students studied computer programming, mathematical problem solving, engineering and planetary science.

   Math & Science Summer Experience for Young  Women (targeted for young women entering grades 6-8).  The Math & Science Summer Experience was a one week experience that provided an avenue for middle school young women to develop their science and math ability and interest.  Each young woman had an opportunity to explore science and math through classroom presentations, hands-on activities, and math and science demonstrations.   The young women rotated each day among three different activities which were 1.5 hours in length.  Students studied computer programming utilizing Alice Software, mathematical problem solving, engineering and planetary science.

  • NEW THIS YEAR!!!! Exploring Our World with Computers (targeted for students entering grade 9).  Exploring Our World with Computers was a four week experience that provided an avenue for students entering high school to explore interdisciplinary science utilizing computers.  Students rotated among three different activities each day in 1.5 hour blocks.  Students studied artificial life, computer programming, computer forensics, and computer engineering.
