Welcome to the wonderful world of SCUBA diving!
Thousands are learning SCUBA and enjoying the sport around the world.
- SCUBA allows you to explore new realms, environments and terrain under water.
- SCUBA is a great learning experience, where students gain knowledge in areas such as
physics, physiology, nature, even history and interpersonal relations.
- SCUBA is both exciting and relaxing!
The Certification classes provide you with the knowledge and skills to safely enjoy
SCUBA diving.
The BU Scuba Club offers basic SCUBA classes each fall, and occasionally in the spring semester, and
are open to BU students and to the BU community.
Here are some of the details:
- Course Length: Approximately 14 hours of classroom
sessions, approximately nine hours of pool training,
and five open water training dives.
We try to keep the course short
and intensive, so that the entire course can be completed in about three weeks.
- Class Size: Maximum of six to a class with one instructor;
more with necessary
teaching assistants (assistant instructors and divemasters).
- Age Requirement: Minimum of 15 years of age. No maximum age, but good
general health is required.
- Swimming Ability: It is more important just to feel comfortable in the
water than to be a strong swimmer.
- Required Equipment:
- Students should bring a notebook and pen for the introductory classroom
session.
- Students will need to purchase the textbook and instructional video.
- For the pool sessions and open water training, students need their own:
- mask
- adjustable fins
- neoprene boots
- regulator mouthpiece
- equipment bag (optional)
- underwater writing slate (optional)
Students must use ONLY gear acquired under the guidance of the SCUBA instructor.
The BU Scuba Club has gear to loan, although it is always better to
purchase these items new.
The BU Scuba Club can provide scuba gear for pool and open-water
training, which includes tanks, regulators, gauges,
buoyancy compensator, environmental suit, and weight belt.
Owning your own equipment is highly recommended.
The Scuba Club can advise new divers regarding the purchase of equipment.
COST
- The textbook and teaching materials cost $65.00, due when the class
begins. In the event of withdrawal from the class for any reason, the sale of
the textbook and student kit remains final; no refunds.
- A non-refundable course fee of $75.00, due before pool training begins.
- We will try to find open water training locations that are free of charge.
However, we may need to use one of the SCUBA recreational parks.
Usually this is Willow Springs, which
charges $22.00/day, for a total of $44.00 for two days of open water training.
Dutch Springs charges $26.00/day, for a total of $52.00
- The basic package of equipment, which includes
a mask, snorkel, open-heal fins, regulator mouthpiece, and neoprene boots,
generally costs around $145.
Again, the BU Scuba Club has extra equipment to lend to students who cannot afford the
basic set of gear.
- Summary of costs (maximum):
- textbook: $65.00
- course fee: $75.00
- basic gear: $145.00
- admission to open-water site: $52.00 (depending)
- total: $331.00
- Summary of costs (minimum):

Upon successful completion of the class/pool sessions and required open water training dives,
an International Open Water Scuba Diver Certification Card will be awarded.
Certification allows divers to dive anywhere in the world.
Certification never requires renewal; it carries a lifetime validity.
