Book Discussions—Reservations Required by September 18, 2009
The following two books have been selected for the fall semester and three discussions will be scheduled for each.

“This book addresses strategies that allow people to maintain moral and ethical standards at work at a time when market forces and other constraints threaten one’s commitment to excellence in a chosen profession. This book also addresses the importance of a strong foundation in traditions that give meaning to one’s work and the need for personal commitment to uphold the values of one’s profession. Engaging Ideas: The Professor's Guide to Integrating Writing, Critical Thinking, and
Active Learning in the Classroom by John C. Bean, Ph.D.

“A practical nuts and bolts guide for teachers from any discipline who want to design interest-provoking
writing and critical thinking activities. Engaging Ideas addresses the following issues: (1) How teachers can encourage inquiry, exploration, discussion, and debate in their courses; (2) A wide variety of strategies for stimulating active learning and for coaching writing and critical thinking; (3) Concrete advice on how teachers can design courses, structure assignment, use class time, critique student performance, and model critical thinking activities; (4) How writing can easily be integrated with such other critical thinking activities and inquiry discussions, simulation games, classroom debates, and interactive lectures.” John C. Article Discussions—No Reservations Necessary
TALE Ambassadors recommended we discuss articles in addition to books. The articles are devoted to
timely topics that encourage us to reflect upon our teaching. Please join us for one or more article
discussions. Just read the article(s) in advance and show up for discussion. No reservations necessary. The
articles are available in three ways:
(1) Access Blackboard under “Community” tab, look for “Teaching And Learning Enhancement Center”, then go to the “Articles” link.
(2) Request a copy from the TALE Center as an e-mail attachment.
(3) Request a copy be sent through Campus Mail (Secretary, Debbie Mucci, 389-5244).
