Setting Up Your Classes

Return to New Faculty Page

What do I need to include in my Syllabus?

The University policy PRP 3233 outlines specific content for your syllabus. You should also consult PRP 3264 which outlines Student Course Requirements and Progress information. In addition, you may want to ask fellow faculty members in your department for sample syllabi to develop a sense of best practices.

Is there a set number of Evaluations I must include in a course?

Yes, all courses must use at least 3 evaluations for grading purposes. Please visit http://www.bloomu.edu/policies/3516.php for more information.

How much does my Final Exam need to be worth?

Final examinations shall be worth no less than twenty percent nor more than forty percent of the course grade. No single exam, paper, project, or assignment shall have greater emphasis than the final examination. Please visit http://www.bloomu.edu/policies/3516.php for more information.

Is there a Final Exam Schedule?

There is an exam schedule that BU follows for finals. You may view this schedule online under the faculty heading on the Registrar's page.

Do I need to purchase my own Textbooks?

You do not have to buy your text books. The publishing companies provide them to professors for free. Contact the company that publishes the text and request a “Professor’s desk copy”. (See department for names of publishers or if you are using a standardized text.)

Where do I order Textbooks?

Textbook and supply ordering can be done through the BU Bookstore. For more information about the BU Bookstore, visit http://bloomustore.com/Home.aspx.

Is there a process for Duplicating?

For duplicating on a small scale, most departments simply use their own copiers. If you have twenty-five or more copies, especially multiple page documents, you may want to submit your order to Duplicating Services. You should talk to your secretary about his/her preferences. Duplicating Services requires you to submit your requests through the "Online Order Entry" at https://departments.bloomu.edu/duplicating. (The duplicating request form available on the S: drive is no longer being accepted.)

What is the procedure for copying final exams?

You can discuss these procedures with your department secretary. If you want Duplicating Services to copy exams, you must do two things. (1) Schedule an appointment by phone or in person to bring your exams in for copying; appointments are for thirty minute segments and can be made at the beginning of each semester. (2) You must complete an Outline Order Entry Form to obtain the work order number.

How do I schedule Library training sessions for my students?

Librarians can provide instruction to your classes in the use of library materials. You should make arrangments at least two weeks in advance. Contact your department's liaison librarian or submit an online request available on the library web page under "Services". Groups not assigned a liaison may contact Michael Coffta, Coordinator of Library Instruction, x 4124. http://library.bloomu.edu/pages/facultyinfo.html#groupinstn
