General Information

Receivers that are in close proximity to each other do not cause feedback, hum, or buzz. It is actually recommended that the receivers be stacked on top of each other in order to produce a clean and presentable setup. If wireless mics are producing hum or buzz (see Terminology), slide the "ground" switch on the rear of the receiver unit to the opposite position.

Each of the KUB portable wireless microphone systems contains one (1) receiver, one (1) lavaliere or lapel transmitter, and one (1) hand held transmitter. Wireless microphones operate on a specific carrier frequency, and the frequencies of the receiver and the transmitter must match in order for the wireless microphones to work together. Each KUB wireless system is labeled and can only be used with that system (e.g. WL 3 (receiver) will only work with HH3 or Lav 3 (transmitters). For the daily purposes of and uses in the Kehr Union Building the components of the wireless systems are not interchangeable.

Only one microphone (either a lapel/lavaliere OR a hand held transmitter) can be used at one time with a receiver. Only one (1) transmitter can be used per receiver, therefore, use of one wireless microphone (system) is limited to EITHER one (1) wireless hand held microphone, OR one (1) wireless lapel microphone.

Wireless microphones, specifically the transmitters (lavaliere or hand held), require batteries in order to operate. KUB microphones require two AA size batteries. Remaining charges of the batteries in the microphones are monitored by looking at the front of the receiver(s) or at the LCD (liquid chrystal display) screens of the microphones (transmitters).

Always check the remaining charge of the batteries in the wireless microphones when setting and when turning on equipment for events. Simply turning on the microphone (transmitter), looking at the charge indicator, and turning off the microphone (transmitter) is not an adequate check of battery charge. This practice will provide misleading information - such as not enough battery charge for the microphone to operate.

In order to adequately check battery charge:

  1. Turn on the receiver.
  2. Turn on the microphone (transmitter).
  3. Wait approximately 2-3 seconds for the system to synchronize its receiver to the transmitter.
  4. Talk into the microphone in order to send a signal to the receiver and also to check the volume level. Talking into the microphone requires the system to use more power in order to reproduce the audio signal. This creates a test simulation that allows the system to adjust its power settings and, therefore, reflect the correct remaining charge of the batteries in the charge indicator.
  5. Look at either the receiver or the transmitter in order to determine the battery charge.
  6. Follow one of the scenarios below.

Scenario 1:

The charge indicator shows two (2) bars or less.

  • The batteries MUST be replaced with new batteries.
  • The old batteries must be discarded/recycled.

Scenario 2:

The charge indicator shows four (4) bars or three (3) bars.

  • The remaining charge is usually adequate for most events or activities lasting from one (1) to three (3) hours.
  • If events/activities are scheduled to last more than three (3) hours, then new batteries must be used for the event.
    • The old batteries can be stored in the USED batteries container in Ken's office.

Setup Considerations:

  • If there is a podium requested and set in the room, use a wireless mic clip and put the mic on the podium.
  • If only a microphone is requested, place the microphone on a mic stand when setting an event. Do not set only a microphone in a room without it being held by a podium or a microphone.
  • Use the appropriate size microphone clip to hold a microphone securely. Wireless microphone clips are too large to hold normal sized microphones and should only be used for wireless microphones. Normal microphone clips are too small to hold wireless microphones and should only be used for normal sized microphones.

Troubleshooting:

Feedback- A majority (or all) of the time, feedback can be eliminated by turning down the microphone(s).

  1. Make sure the mic input's volume level at the sound system is at 10:00-12:00. Also make sure that the master volume knob is set at approximately 12:00.
  2. On the rear of the wireless RECEIVER there is a 3-position switch that has -12, -6 and 0 written above it. If you are still having problems after normalizing the volumes from #1, move the switch one position downward (If it’s at 0, move the switch to -6). This switch reduces (or raises) the microphone’s gain by -6db (or +6db). This reduces the sensitivity of the mic and should solve your problem.
