Setup Considerations

What You Need to Know

  1. IMPORTANT!! ALL LAPTOPS MUST BE LOCKED TO SOME INANIMATE (NON-MOVEABLE) OBJECT AT ALL TIMES TO PREVENT THEFT! Use a laptop security cable that are hanging next to the laptop storage rack.
    1. Do not lock laptops to backdrop curtains.
  2. Security Cable Lock Code: The same code that we use for all lock, or password/passcode functions. IMPORTANT! After securing the lock to the laptop scramble the code of a lock before leaving the setup. If the code is visible, people will be able to see it, know what it is, and:
    1. Steal the equipment, and/or
    2. change the code so that we cannot access the equipment.

Troubleshooting

Password does not work

If you try to login 5 consecutive times unsuccessfully, your account gets locked for 10 minutes. After which you can try to log in again.

Long logins after user name and password input

  1. The computers do not automatically log in using the kublaptop account. Staff, Faculty, and Students login to the presentation computers using their own accounts. This means:
    • Computers will take longer for people to log in since users’ desktops will be transferred to the presentation computer being used. The solution is to have presenters log into the computer a few (10) minutes earlier.
    • After a period of 60 minutes of non-activity (not moving the mouse or not using the computer), computer screens will enter a lock screen. This will require people to log into their account again. One solution is to remind people to move the mouse every once in a while.

No Internet / Wireless (WiFi) not connected

No audio

  1. If using a VGA cable - One or both ends of the cable may be unplugged: A) From the audio system's 3.5mm input jack; or B) From the computer's 3.5mm audio output jack.
  2. If using an HDMI and/or DisplayPort cable - HDMI and DisplayPort cables pass BOTH video and audio.
  3. Troubleshooting PC Sound

No projected image

  1. Troubleshooting PC Video/Projection
  2. Some laptops do not automatically turn on their external video port when a projector is connected. Usually a key combination like FN + F8 or CRT/LCD key turns the external display on and off. Locate a function key labeled CRT/LCD or function key with a monitor symbol. Press FN and the labeled function key simultaneously.
  3. Commands to activate/deactivate laptop video outputs

Wireless mouse not working

  1. The presentation mouse and receiver base may not be matched. The mice and the receivers are labelled. Only matching labels work together (e.g. Mouse #3 works with receiver #3).
  2. The presentation mouse and receiver may not be programmed to use with a PC. Mice programmed to work with a Mac will not work on a PC and vice versa. Check the label. Match the mouse and receiver to the appropriate computer type (Mac or PC).
  3. Batteries may need changed. Push the button for the laser (don't point it at anyone's face or eyes, or shine it out the window). If the laser works, then dead batteries are not the problem.
  4. Wireless presentation mice need batteries. If batteries fall out because of dropping, the mouse may need to be reprogrammed to the receiver (See page 3 of the manual).
  5. LEAST LIKELY - The software driver for the presentation mouse may no longer be installed.

Keyboard not typing correct letters/characters, or are typing numbers.

  • To make the keyboard revert to its standard functionality, press FUNCTION + NumLock keys simultaneously.

Other Considerations:

  1. Updating PCs and PC laptops (See printed directions in the Tech Lair).
  2. If connecting a laptop to the Ballroom video inputs, you may need a cable that has a display port connection on one end (for the laptop) and an HDMI connection on the other end (for the AV wall connection). The ends of this cable is labeled accordingly. These cables are stored on the cable wall with the HDMI cables.
