Shelter-in-Place Procedures
- If an incident causes the buildings or areas around you to become unstable, or if toxic or irritating substances make the outdoor air dangerous to breathe, it is often safer to stay indoors, rather than expose yourself to danger. Shelter-in-place means to take shelter in the building where you are. With a few adjustments, this location can be made safer and more comfortable until it is safe to go outside. If you are inside, stay where you are. Collect any emergency shelter-in-place supplies and a telephone to be used in case of emergency. If you are outdoors, quickly proceed into the closest building or follow instructions from emergency personnel on the scene.
- Locate a room to shelter inside. It should be:
- An interior room;
- Above ground level (some chemical agents are heavier than air and may seep into a basement);
- Without windows or with the least number of windows.
- Several rooms may be necessary for a large group of people inside a particular building.
- In the case of a weather event such as a tornado, the basement is a preferred location.
- You will be provided information through our emergency notification system.
- Close and lock all windows (tighter seal) and close exterior doors.
- Turn off air conditioners, heaters and fans.
- Close vents to ventilation systems, as you are able.
- Make a list with names of all people who are sheltering with you. Ask one person to call the Bloomsburg University Police Department to inform officers of your sheltering location. BUPD phone number is 570-389-4775.
- Turn on a radio or TV for further instructions.
